So...What is a "Blog" anyhow?

Basically, it's like a cross between a diary and a newsletter, posted online for the world to see.  The entries are dated in chronological order, with the most recent ones appearing at the top of the page.  When you make a post to your blog, you are "blogging."  Someone who does this on a regular basis is known as a "blogger."

Why should I get one?

Because your life is so interesting and wonderful that you feel an uncontrollable urge to share it with the world.  Because communication with other humans is what keeps us from killing each other.  But, if that's not enough, then get one to earn extra ASK points for Mr. Locke's class and get out of doing DJ's (Spring Semester Only).

What do I blog about?

Just about anything.  The content of your entries can include personal things like what's going on in your life, school-related things like your comments on something you read in class, or even random thoughts about things you love (music, movies, websites) and things you hate (annoying teachers, little brothers, cafeteria food).  Some people blog their favorite song lyrics, news articles, or even their own poetry.  The only thing I require is that you keep it clean.  Remember, the world is watching.  Your mother might, too.

How do I get out of DJ's?

When you sign up for a blog during the Spring Semester, you are making a commitment to Mr. Locke that for the rest of the school year, you will make at least three entries per week.    Your entries don't all have to be about English literature, but some should.  When everyone else turns in DJ's, you will turn in just the rubric, with a note telling me to visit your blog.  I will then check your blog, and grade you based on all entries that have anything to do with whatever literature we're currently reading.

How do I get ASK points?

By consistently posting to your blog.  ASK points reflect participation, and for every day you "participate" in your blog by making an entry, you will gain two ASK points.  If you keep your 3-entries-per-week commitment, that's an automatic 6 ASK points each week.

Do I have to Blog in proper English?

While I would hope that you care enough about your image not to sound ridiculous to the world at large, I also respect your desire to express yourself in your own unique style.  I will only grade grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary for entries that specifically have to do with English Literature.  For personal entries, you're on your own!  Just keep it clean.

How do I get started?

If you've read this far, and you want your very own blog, first visit some of the blogs belonging to other Sunset students to get a better idea of what a blog is.  When you are ready, go to www.blogger.com and follow the instructions to start a blog in three easy steps.  Be sure to come up with an interesting title for your blog.  Then send an email to newblog@mrlocke.net to let me know the address of your blog and its title.  I'll send you an email with some additional instructions to finalize your blog.  After that, just start blogging!  If you get stuck or need help, come see me after school.
